The collection contains the correspondence of Shackelford and his mother Peachy Gascoigne Lyne Shackelford of Willow Grove, Orange Co., Va. Mrs. Shackelford writes news of family and friends in Orange Co., and Shackelford writes about his U. Va. schooldays and teaching positions, particularly as history professor at Virginia Polytechnic institute, Blacksburg, Va. Of interest are his descriptions of an archival course taught at Harvard by Lester Cappon. There are also letters and papers regarding Shackelford's service in the Naval Reserve, some letters from and obituaries of Virginius Randolph Shackelford, memorabilia from a trip abroad and photographs of Shackelford and his mother. Carter Walker, headmaster of Woodbury Forest, and Douglas Southall Freeman are correspondents.
